RRA Rehab — Drug Detox & Addiction Treatment Advisors
RRA Rehab opened on Plumas Street in 2020 after Mateo and Rosario Akwesi lost their son Ramon to a fentanyl-laced opioid overdose in September 2019. Ramon had completed two prior treatment programs — both two hours from home in the Bay Area and Sacramento — and the family had come to believe that the distance, the rotating clinicians, and the impersonal scale of larger facilities had failed him.
Six years later, our 37-bed campus on Plumas Street has supported more than 2,200 alumni across the Sacramento Valley. We remain a smaller program by choice — small enough that every resident is known by name, every family is supported by the same clinical team from intake through alumni programming, and the founding commitment is still personal: no Sutter County family should lose another adult child to the gap between needing help and finding it.
37 beds means the same clinical team supports you and your family from the first call through alumni programming. No rotating staff, no anonymous case file.
Built by a family that lost their son to overdose. The commitment to do this differently shows up in our refusal to treat residents as outpatient volume.
Music therapy, art studio, and creative writing are not enrichment add-ons — they are scheduled clinical modalities that reach what talk therapy alone cannot.
Most residents come from within 90 minutes of our Plumas Street campus — Yuba City, Marysville, Live Oak, Chico, Roseville, Sacramento. Close to home.
Our protocols track the addiction medicine literature, not the recovery folklore that has hardened around so many older programs. Updated annually.
Chaplaincy from any tradition, secular meaning-making groups, or neither — the question of what gives recovery purpose belongs at the center, not the edges.

— Antoine R., Residential & Family Track Alumni, March 2026"I had been drinking for fourteen years and my marriage was a few months from over when I called RRA. I had tried two programs out of state before. What was different here was Rosario — the founder — sat down with my wife on day three and said, 'I lost my son to the gap between treatment and home. We are not letting that happen here.' That conversation reset everything. We just hit our second anniversary, sober, with our daughters telling jokes at the dinner table again."
— Phoebe K., Dual Diagnosis Program Alumni, December 2025"I had been chasing the wrong diagnosis for fifteen years. Three psychiatrists, three different medication cocktails, none of which addressed the bipolar II that was actually driving the cocaine use. RRA's dual diagnosis program caught it in the second week. Once Dr. Hara dialed in the right mood stabilizer, the cravings became actually manageable for the first time in my adult life. Twenty months stable, both on the medication and off the cocaine."
— Roy T., Retired Firefighter, Dual Diagnosis Alumni, April 2025"I drove for Marysville Fire for nineteen years before the drinking caught up with me. The shame of needing treatment as a first responder almost kept me from making the call. What helped at RRA was the clinical team understood occupational trauma differently than the programs I had been referred to before. The neurofeedback work and the small-group setting meant I was not explaining my job to people who had never been on a scene. I retired sober last spring and I sponsor two other firefighters from the Valley."
A licensed counselor — not a phone tree — answers within sixty seconds, day or night. The first call usually takes 15 to 25 minutes. We listen first: what is happening, who is calling, how urgent the situation is. Insurance verification typically completes within 2 to 4 hours. About one in eight first calls ends with a referral to a different program if RRA is not the right fit, and that is exactly the point.
Roughly 62% of 2024 admissions came to us within seven days of their first call. Same-day admission is possible when a bed is open and the medical situation calls for it. Our admissions team also helps families think through FMLA, childcare, and short-term financial planning before you arrive.
